The Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame will induct its five newest members to its Hall during the fourth annual induction ceremony and banquet this Saturday, Oct. 16 at the Rockland Elks Lodge. The 2010 inductees include the late Bob Morrill, Jeff Hart, Carroll LaHaye, Bob Brown and Dean Erickson.
Morrill coached at Rockland District High School for 39 years, leading the Tigers Baseball squad to the 1989 Class B Championship. Morrill also coached Varsity Football and Varsity and JV Basketball during his career at RDHS. Hart has led the Windjammers basketball program since 1983 and is closing in on his 400th career victory. Hart has taken the Windjammers to 23 Eastern Maine Class B Tournaments, capturing eight Eastern Maine Crowns and five State Championships (1999, 2001, 2002, 2005 and 2009). Hart was named to the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009. LaHaye, a 1973 graduate from Medomak Valley High School, attended the University of Maine at Machias, where the school retired her basketball number. LaHaye has been the Women’s Basketball Coach at Randolph-Macon in Ashland, Virginia since 1982, where she has won 471 games and is ranked 15th all-time in the history of NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball. LaHaye’s Yellow Jackets squad lost the National Championship game in 2005. Brown is one of the most respected basketball coaches in Maine, winning 583 games over a 40 high school and college seasons, including coaching basketball at Rockland District High School from 1968 through 1974. Brown has won 4 Class A State Championships, two each at South Portland and Cheverus, He also won 142 college games at St. Anselm, Southern Maine and Boston University. Erickson was a standout point guard for Medomak Valley, leading the Panthers to the 1975 and 1977 Class B Western Maine Championships, winning the Gold Ball in 1977. Erickson played Division 1 basketball for three seasons at Brown University.The Hall will also name its Male and Female Midcoast High School Student Athlete of the Year. The five male finalists include Cameron Gartley of Camden Hills, Alex MacKenzie of Medomak Valley, Tyler McFarland of Camden Hills, Dylan Meklin of Rockland and Alexander Young of Rockland. The five female finalists are Erin Cooper of North Haven, Danielle Frye of Georges Valley, Hayli Kinney of Rockland, Lianne McClusky of Camden Hills and Maddy Smeaton of Camden Hills.
Tickets for the Oct. 16 banquet at the Rockland Elks Lodge are $25 each and are available by calling Dave Ames at 789-5118 or Sue Wootton at 236-4155. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m. with the induction to get underway by 7:00 PM.
